Games that feature technological development may include the notion of
<STRONG>advances</STRONG>.  Advances range from ancient technologies or discoveries
such as pottery or horseback riding, through modern-day innovations
like jet engines, computers, and MTV (OK, maybe not MTV), and into
future advances such as limb regeneration or faster-than-light travel.

You achieve an advance by acquiring any prerequisite advances, then
having your side or individual units do research on the desired advance.
Advances may be prerequisites to unit construction, and/or to other
advances.
